FT Manager of Administrative Work for Bklyn-based Adult Literacy Classes

Make the Road New York’s Adult Literacy Department seeks a highly motivated, organized, dedicated  and experienced manager to oversee all of the administrative work associated with our ESOL and ABE classes in MRNY’s Brooklyn location, as well as to provide support to MRNY’s Staten Island-based adult literacy staff member(s).  The Adult Literacy Manager of Administrative work will support a dynamic Adult literacy program offering English, Citizenship preparation and health career job training classes to immigrant New Yorkers. The position will be based out of MRNY’s office in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

 

Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish, and possess very strong computer and administrative skills.  We need a trustworthy individual, with the ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours on a cyclical basis.  In addition, candidates must be willing to travel occasionally to our Staten Island, and our Queens centers, as needed.  Applicants must have at least 2 years previous experience working in an office setting.  The ideal candidate must be efficient, communicative, and a team player who is able to multi-task and work well under pressure.  They should also be able to meet deadlines as needed, be a fast learner, take initiative and work independently with high quality standards.  In addition applicants must be able to type at least 35 wpm, and demonstrate strong proficiency with Google drive and Microsoft Office suite programs, as well as experience working with data entry in databases.

 

Manager’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Training and management of administrative assistants and volunteers supporting MRNY’s Adult Literacy team’s admin work
  • Scheduling intake appointments for students and re-enrolling students in additional cycles
  • Pre and post testing of students using a variety of testing programs
  • Scheduling and managing outreach as well as enrollment of students in classes
  • Managing class attendance – entering information in MRNY’s database and tracking docs, calling absent students
  • Updating student records in MRNY’s database as needed
  • Reviewing students’ records
  • Communicating via phone, email, etc. with team members and across the organization as needed to keep work moving smoothly
  • As needed: photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, updating waiting lists, and assisting staff with any other job requests.
  • Attending trainings and meetings, including regular support meetings with supervisees and supervisor and mtgs with other admin team members

 

Compensation: Starting compensation is based on a scale set by a democratically-elected personnel committee and will depend on factors such as experience and education.  MRNY offers a generous benefit package including health insurance and 401K.

Temporary Part time Adult Education Administrative Support worker(s) in Q and Bklyn

We need temporary PT workers to help us with work in June, as well as in the Summer and hopefully beyond the Summer in the school year beginning in September.

We need Temporary Part time Adult Education Administrative Support worker(s) to help with end of class cycle activities in June, possibly into the Summer and the school year. (We need more help in Brooklyn than in Queens and expect Brooklyn temp workers to work through the summer.)

 

Temp PT workers could work 5 to 15 hrs/wk  during busy periods, but the minimum number of hours will depend on your availability and the amount of work that comes up.

 

In our Bushwick, Brooklyn office we also need:

A Temporary PT Coordinator of Adult Education Admin work for Brooklyn and SI classes.

 

This job could develop into a more stable position as a Coordinator of Adult Ed Health Training programs, but we won’t know until the summer for sure because of funding uncertainties.  This job will be over 30 hrs/wk and will include the supervision of other PT staff and volunteers.

 

Who should apply:

  • Candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish, must be able to type at least 35 wpm, and have demonstrated computer experience in office programs including Salesforce, Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.
  • We need a trustworthy individual, with the flexibility to work different days and hours including during the evening and on occasional weekends in Brooklyn and Staten Island, and in our Queens center, as needed.
  • Applicants must have at least 2 years previous experience working in an office setting.
  • The ideal candidate must be efficient, communicative, a team player, and able to multi-task and work well under pressure.
  • A strong candidate should also be able to meet deadlines as needed, be a fast learner, take initiative and work independently with high quality standards.
  • Candidates with Associate's degrees in relevant area of focus and experience are preferable.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Pre and post testing ESOL students using Best Plus software, and in Brooklyn the TABE test for health program students (training will be arranged)
  • Enrolling students in classes
  • Checking attendance in Salesforce database (training to be provided)
  • Entering in Salesforce referrals and other information as needed
  • Calling absent students and writing notes on Google master lists
  • Calling students on waiting lists to make intake appointments
  • Reviewing students’ records
  • Emailing staff with different requests
  •  Re-enrolling students
  • Filling out surveys
  • Provide support to outreach and administrative staff
  • Answering and making phones calls, photocopying, faxing, filing, typing, updating waiting lists, and assisting staff with any other job requests.
  • Attending trainings and meeting as needed
  • Providing outreach for classes

Position summary:

The Basic Education/High School Equivalency Teacher is a part-time position that includes teaching Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies, as well as Test Taking Skills to adults at a Basic Education level who want to advance to an HSE class.

 

Qualifications include  a Bachelor degree, and at least 2 years of ABE or HSE experience with adults.  Ability to TABE test required.

Riverside Language Program

Riverside Language Program is seeking substitute ESOL teachers available to teach a 5-hour day, with an hour for lunch. Classes are free, full-time and intensive, running from 9am-3pm, Monday to Friday. Students are adult immigrants, asylees and refugees from more than 50 countries, speaking more than 90 native languages. Riverside employs a student-centered, communicative English language teaching approach focusing on speaking, listening, grammar and pronunciation. Civics and IT skills are also an important part of our curriculum. Teachers and substitutes have the freedom to create their own lesson plans. Our four class levels range from basic to high intermediate. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in TESOL or a closely-related discipline, or be CELTA-certified.
